What is Swine Flu?

Swine flu is a respiratory disease caused by a virus that has some elements of the virus that causes influenza in pigs. It produces a disease in humans similar to that of human influenza. Infection with the swine influenza virus has been detected occasionally in humans since the 1950s. The current outbreak was first noticed in Mexico and has progressively spread to many parts of the world.

Breastfeeding is natural and normal and gives your baby the best start

Decades have been spent in the laboratory deciphering the nutritional requirements of the growing neonate. An immense amount of time and money has been absorbed in finding the perfect substitute for human milk and this will inevitably continue. On the other hand, artificial feeding has been described as the worldís largest experiment without controls by the World Health organisation in 1981.
Although the health benefits of breastfeeding are well documented and initiation rates have increased over the years, most mothers at least in the UK wean before the recommended 6-months postpartum because of perceived difficulties with breastfeeding rather than due to maternal choice.

Outbreak of Swine Influenza in the Americas PDF Print E-mail

The Governmentís Civil Contingency Committee is keeping the outbreak of Swine Influenza under close review, will monitor developments, and will take any measures as and when necessary to minimise the impact on Gibraltar. The Gibraltar Health Authority, and other public health authorities are well placed to deal with the matter, which, at this stage requires only precautionary measures and there is currently no cause for alarm or concern in Gibraltar.

Any person that has recently visited Mexico, or come into contact with anyone who has, and experiences flu-like symptoms should report to his/her GP or the GHA.
